Mindy Domb, Candidate for State Representative, Receives Endorsement from Veteran Amherst Legislato

May 18, 2018 - The campaign to elect Mindy Domb for State Representative today announced the endorsement of Ellen Story, former Democratic state representative of Amherst for 24 years. Ms. Story will also serve as the Honorary Chair of Domb’s campaign.
“I’m honored to receive Ellen’s support,” said Mindy Domb. “It is particularly significant to me that my first endorsement comes from Ellen because she was an energetic, highly effective representative for Amherst in Boston for decades, and is a model of progressive Democratic leadership on a range of issues. She excelled at constituent service and was dedicated to advocating for the needs of those in the 3rd Hampshire District, celebrating their milestones and connecting them to government. I’m running because I believe that’s exactly what Amherst needs again.”

She brings amazing empathy to everything she does – she knows when to listen, and when to act. Her entire career, from the time she started advocating on behalf of HIV/AIDS patients in New York City in the 1980s, to her recent work making the Amherst Survival Center one of the preeminent such organizations in the country, shows a singular ability to get things done. I am also excited at the prospect of having a strong female Democrat speaking for us in Boston, building on positive momentum taking place all over the country.”
A 20-year resident of Amherst, Mindy Domb has dedicated her life to addressing the needs of underserved communities, supporting vulnerable individuals, and advocating for fairness and equity. As a community organizer, public health educator, trainer, program developer, advocate, and congressional aide, she has developed innovative services through partnerships, community education, and community coalitions in Western Massachusetts and across the Commonwealth. Since 2013, she has been the Executive Director of the Amherst Survival Center, connecting residents of Amherst, Pelham, Granby, and surrounding towns, to food, clothing, healthcare, wellness, community, and a variety of assistance. Mindy has led statewide programs in Massachusetts to educate staff of drug and alcohol treatment programs, jails, and homeless shelters on issues of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and overdose prevention. In addition, she directed a training program for health and human service providers to support LGBTQ youth. Her work has been recognized by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the International Harm Reduction Association. Co-founder of the Berkshire AIDS Coalition, Mindy served as the Department of Public Health’s regional coordinator of its HIV testing program, and started Massachusetts’ first jail-based HIV education program in the Berkshire County House of Corrections. She is a former member of Amherst Town Meeting, was the co-coordinator of the Amherst campaign to elect Elizabeth Warren to the U.S. Senate in 2012 and the Amherst organizer for the campaign to elect Maura Healey Massachusetts Attorney General in 2014. In 2010, Mindy founded Make It Better Amherst, a social network of allies that formed in response to the suicide epidemic of LGBTQ teens. Before moving to Massachusetts, Mindy worked for Congressman Ted Weiss (D-NY), opening his lower Manhattan district office, conducting constituent services, advocating for a federal response to the HIV epidemic, and working to prevent the federal government from stationing nuclear weapons in New York Harbor. Mindy lives in Amherst with her partner, Matthew Sadof, a pediatrician at the High Street Pediatric Health Clinic in Springfield. They have two adult daughters, both of whom are graduates of Amherst public schools.
