DAILY HAMPSHIRE GAZETTE: Mindy Domb receives endorsement of the Massachusetts Teachers Association
AMHERST — Mindy Domb has received the endorsement of the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) in her campaign for State Representative of the 3rd Hampshire District.
“Educators and students can count on Mindy Domb,” said MTA president Merrie Najimy in a press release. “As the mother of two graduates of the Amherst Public Schools, Mindy is committed to advocating for our students and for our public schools, colleges and universities. As the state representative for the 3rd Hampshire District, she will stand up for working people — and she will do all she can to ensure the success of families and communities throughout the Commonwealth.”
“I am honored and very proud of the MTA’s endorsement,” Domb said in the same release. “Not only because so many residents of the 3rd Hampshire District are working in, or retired from, public education, or have a student in a public education classroom, but also because as a union they are on the front lines of fighting for working people, human and civil rights, advocating for the power of organizing and coalition-building and championing quality public education and economic equality in Massachusetts. I am humbled by their support and vote of confidence.”
She continued, “There are many challenges to education in the state, and I am eager to work with the MTA on Beacon Hill. I look forward to participating in legislative efforts — bolstered by grassroots activism — to support fully funding public education in the Commonwealth, maintaining a cap on charter schools and changing their funding mechanism, and funding regional school transportation budgets.”
Domb also said that the Commonwealth must address student debt “for Massachusetts students who attend in-state colleges and universities,” in addition to “[exploring] tuition-free community colleges and trade schools.”
Domb, who is the executive director of the Amherst Survival Center, added that the community must “understand and respond to student hunger and food insecurity and its connection to income inequality overall.”
She said that the MTA endorsement “demonstrates the value of my experience working with communities across the Commonwealth to advocate for equity, opportunity, access to health care, and a job that pays a living wage with safe working conditions and dignity.”
Domb continued, “The MTA endorsement also recognizes my track record in taking action to creating meaningful change. I am eager to bring that experience and those skills to the State House and fight for greater investments in public education, and support for teachers, students, working families and our communities.”
The 3rd Hampshire District is comprised of Amherst, Pelham and precinct 1 of Granby.
The primary will be held on Sept. 4.
